Mental Health and Counseling Clinic

Good mental health is the foundation of all healthy communities, and ours is no exception—unfortunately, immigrant and uninsured populations labor under various stresses that impact their mental health. Our counseling clinic provides free and low-cost counseling for depression, anxiety, and the effects of trauma and family violence. We specialize in counseling for marriage and divorce, parenting, and culturally-specific family system issues. In addition, our volunteer psychiatrists hold a psychiatry clinic to support diagnosis and prescriptions. Escalated cases and psychological assessments are handled as referrals to appropriate providers or agencies.

Dr. Basheer Ahmed established the first Muslim Charitable Mental health services in Texas at the Al-Shifa clinic in 1998.

Incidents of mental health issues are high among immigrants, and very few charitable clinics offer mental health services. The Clinic is staffed by a volunteer psychiatrist, and counselors offer treatment for depression and stress-related anxiety. Patients with more serious mental disorders are referred to local public mental health clinics for more appropriate treatment therapies. Licensed Social workers and volunteer therapists provide counseling services to patients with anxiety disorders, Marital problems, victims of domestic violence, and other mental health issues.
